Dental Hygiene & Cleanings
Preventive dentistry is the key to a long-lasting, healthy smile. We are focused on giving our patients the information and preventive care that they deserve to limit the amount of dental care that they need over time.
Our dental hygienists are skilled and knowledgeable. When you come in for your dental hygiene appointment, your hygienist will go over an assessment of your oral health, which encompasses looking at your soft tissues for signs of health and/or disease, taking measurements of the attachment levels of your gums to help determine the degree of gum disease present in your mouth, removal of soft and hard deposits from your teeth, as well as providing you with recommendations based on your individual needs. Our hygienists often spend the most amount of time with you and therefore work closely with both you and our dentists to assist in developing the best treatment plan for you long term.
Do I need to have my teeth professionally cleaned?
Even if you brush and floss after every meal and before bed, bacteria-harbouring plaque can accumulate in the tiny crevices, grooves and pits. Overtime, the teeth will begin to decay in those areas, which may result in pain and partial or total tooth loss.
What is Plaque and Calculus?
Plaque is the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth. Bacteria live in plaque and secrete acids that cause tooth decay and irritate gum tissue. This irritation causes an inflammatory reaction by your body that can eventually lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease.
If plaque is not removed regularly by tooth brushing and flossing, it hardens to create calculus (also known as tartar). Calculus cannot be removed with a toothbrush; only a dental professional can remove it during an oral cleaning. To keep plaque and calculus under control, it is essential to brush your teeth twice every day, floss at least once every day, and see your dental professional for regular cleanings.
